Duluth Panoramic Postcards (1914)

Two Foot Long, Colorized, Bird's Eye Views

By L. P. Gallagher, 1914 (Bookhouse, Panoramas)

I came across these rolled-up postcards (yes, they have a place for a stamp and address on the back!) in an old collection of regular postcards that had nothing to do with Duluth or Minnesota. After some research by friends and family we came up with approximate dates. Based on the early automobiles and horse-carts we dated the downtown view before 1920 (Full-Res Image).

The second images is clearly from a different time. Someone familiar with Duluth history noted that the famous lift bridge was built in 1929 (Full-Res Image).

The Photographer

Louis Perry Gallagher (Jan 31 1874 - Feb 20 1945) was an early panoramic photographer who lived in Duluth for many years. He specialised in architectural and urban subjects. Otherwise I can find very little about him online. This is the earliest photo by him I could find, from the Library of Congress:

It turns out several early photographers took panoramas of Duluth around the turn of the last century: Duluth Panoramas Seeing Change Over Time (1870-1913)
