On this trip we planned to visit part of the central BWCA that had been ravaged by the 2011 Pagami Fire. Our goal was to reach Malberg Lake and take day trips from there. We entered at Kawishiwi Lake and proceeded down a small river maintained by a huge beaver dam.

From there we took two long portages to Lake Polly where we camped the first night. There was an afternoon cloudburst, but the sun came back in time to help us dry out.

The next day we portaged to the southern arm of Malberg—a lake with a very complex layout.

After a bit of exploration, we were able to take the primo beach campsite! (orange arrow in the photo above)

From there we took several loop day trips into the surrounding lakes. On the final day we retraced our steps back to civilization.
